Pokémon GO Under New Ownership as Scopely Closes $3.5 Billion Niantic Deal

Scopely has officially completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic’s gaming business, bringing several popular AR titles, including Pokémon GO, Monster Hunter Now, and Pikmin Bloom, under its umbrella. The deal was finalized on May 29, 2025, just 11 weeks after the acquisition plan was announced.

"We are proud to share that we closed the acquisition of Niantic’s game business on May 29th, 2025," Scopely stated. The agreement includes not only the games but also community-builder apps like Campfire and Wayfarer.

More than 400 Niantic team members will join Scopely, continuing to support these games and their global player communities. Pokémon GO, which has accounted for 95% of Niantic’s app revenue, remains the centerpiece of the deal. Michael Steranka, Pokémon GO’s product director, reassured players that Scopely will maintain the game's player-focused approach, with no plans to introduce intrusive ads or sell location data.

With this acquisition, the games now fall under the ownership of Savvy Games Group, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which owns Scopely.

Meanwhile, Niantic retains control over Ingress Prime and Peridot and is pivoting toward its new geospatial AI venture, Niantic Spatial. As part of this restructure, layoffs have affected portions of the Niantic workforce.

Niantic’s founder and CEO, John Hanke, commented, "Niantic games have always been a bridge to connect people and inspire exploration, and I am confident they will continue to do both as part of Scopely."

This acquisition marks a major shift for the Pokémon GO community and highlights Scopely’s growing influence in the mobile gaming industry.
